Hilaly’s Racist Anglo-Saxon Comments

Darulfatwa of Australia as a mainstream Sunni authority wishes to inform the Australian community both its Muslim and non-Muslim sectors that the most recent furore cause by the Hilaly’s racist views against the heritage of Anglo-Saxon Australians is not representative of Australian Muslims. Since the story broke out, Darulfatwa has been playing a pacifying role by answering the phone calls of angry Australians (both Muslims and non-Muslims) calling up the council to show their disapproval of the Hilaly as a religious figure.  The Hilaly has again been a divisive figure in the community causing tensions between Muslim and non-Muslim Australians.  Our young people and especially our young females who wear the headscarf are mostly bearing the brunt, by being taken as objects of ridicule in public. Darulfatwa has been receiving complaints from normal Australian Muslims who are reporting cases of discrimination and Islam-phobia against themselves or against members of their families. Darulfatwa dreads the negative effects of alienation and disenfranchisement that such acts of discrimination can have on our Australian Muslim youth who wish to normally go about their lives. To the Australian public, Darulfatwa announces that Hilaly is not a revered figure nor is he an Islamic representative to Australia’s Muslims. The title of Mufti which he claims to hold is not a result of any official appointment by a respectable spiritual body. Hence, his self-imposed title is null, and it would go against the sentiment of Australian Muslims if any media source uses the title of Mufti in relation to the Hilaly. Enough is enough, let’s all help by being part of a campaign to put an end to this vicious cycle of ill-informed comments that are usually followed by reprisal attacks on Australian Muslims. To do so, Australian Muslims must take every opportunity to denounce the Hilaly as their leader including those at lakemba’s Lebanese Muslim Association, while non-Muslims can support their fellow Muslim friends by not recognising or labelling the Hilaly as a Mufti to Australia’s Muslim community.
